A PERIOD OF GRACE

Wellness for women acquires a completely different meaning during menopause. Shweta Parekh, Skincare Confidante and Director, Infinite Enterprises, answers Priyanka Parshurami’s questions about the impact of menopause on skin and hair.

Damn, It's Hot!' is a book that addresses menopause and its relevance to skincare. Most women think menopause-related skincare issues are unavoidable and untreatable. But that's not the case. With proper care and holistic wellness, you can sail through this vital phase without compromising your skin and hair health. That's the message Shweta Parekh, Skincare Confidante and Director, Infinite Enterprises, is trying to spread through her book.

EXCERPTS FROM THE INTERVIEW:

What was the idea behind writing a book on menopausal skincare?

The inspiration behind writing both my books - ‘Why Skincare?’ and ‘Damn, It’s Hot’ - stemmed from my observations of the lack of awareness and support surrounding menopause, particularly in the context of skincare. The books aim to bridge this gap by providing comprehensive information, practical tips and empowering strategies to navigate menopause with confidence and grace

My second book builds upon the foundation laid by my first book,‘Damn, It’s Hot,’ and delves deeper into an enhanced understanding of what is going on, along with practical strategies and holistic approaches to empower women in managing their menopausal wellness journey through skincare.

What are the key changes experienced during menopause, especially related to skin and hair?

During menopause, women undergo quite a few changes.Talking about skin and hair, particularly a decline in estrogen levels, has a direct impact.

CERTAIN COMMON SKIN CHANGES INCLUDE:

Thinning and dryness due to decreased collagen and elastin production Increased vulnerability to wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin.

Loss of skin elasticity and firmness Development of age spots or hyperpigmentation due to hormonal shifts and increased sun sensitivity Onset of conditions such as rosacea or triggering of skin issues like acne due to hormonal imbalances

CHANGES IN HAIR INCLUDE:

Thinning and loss of volume due to reduced estrogen levels Increased dryness and brittleness Changes in texture and appearance, such as grayling or changes in curl pattern

Which are the correct ways to address skin and hair-related issues?

Addressing skin and hair issues during menopause requires a simple approach: be kind, consistent and minimalist whenever possible. If necessary, be quick to adapt and seek professional assistance. The key is to maintain a balance. Since the menopause journey spans quite a few years of your life, it’s essential to be aware, notice the changes and seek solutions accordingly.

Women need to realise that #ITISOKTOTALK about what they are going through. There is nothing to hide or feel uncomfortable about

What care can pre-menopausal women take to avoid excessive impact on their hair and skin?

Today, preventive care is the best way forward, and I would say apply the same concept here and work on minimising the impact of hormonal changes on their hair and skin. Following are the basic care taking for skin and hair:

SKINCARE

Establish a consistent skincare routine focusing on cleansing, toning, moisturising, and sun protection.

Get professional advice on what kind of treatments and products you should be using, customised to your skin. Do not go in for trends blindly.

HAIRCARE

Use mild, hydrating shampoos and conditioners to combat dryness and maintain hair health.

Incorporate hair masks or treatments rich in moisturising and strengthening ingredients like keratin or argan oil.

Avoid excessive heat styling and harsh chemical treatments to prevent further damage to hair follicles.

Consult with a dermatologist or trichologist for personalised hair care recommendations, if needed.

What role can beauticians and skin therapists play to ensure minimal impact on hair and skin of their clients during menopause?

As professionals in this dynamic industry, we have the privilege of uplifting individuals and guiding them effectively. Amidst the menopause journey, customisation becomes pivotal.Tailored skincare treatments and facials address specific concerns like dryness, wrinkles or hyperpigmentation. Equally crucial is educating clients on suitable skincare products and personalised home care routines to suit individual skin types and concerns. Emphasising the significance of sun protection and proper skin care practices ensures the maintenance of skin health and vitality.

PHYSICAL HOLISTIC CARE

Maintain a balanced diet to support overall health and skin vitality

Engage in regular exercise, including strength training and cardiovascular activities, to improve circulation and maintain muscle tone

Prioritise your sleep. This will really support repair and aid in balance
