Make Believe

Make-up can glam you up and dress you down to perfection. Make-up is an art and two artists share with us their seasonal, top tips of the trade.

Makeup trends: “Since we have now stepped into a new normal lifestyle where clients wear a mask to all events, the upcoming makeup trends for 2021 will involve enhancing areas like the eyes, nails, and hair which are easily visible,” says Gunjan Taneja Gaur, Director, Bharti Taneja's Alps Beauty Group

Cherag Bambboat, celebrity makeup artist and Director of Education at Magical Makeovers, similarly shares what clients are doing now-a-days because of the mask, “Many people are going in for stained lips which are longer wear, like Berry-Stained Mouth, which is much in vogue and trend. Also, Dolphin skin is popular, it is skin, which has the sheen of a fish scale. A third trend is that a lot of people have started using coloured kohl/kajal; naturally if lips are covered then you play around with what’s shown – colours like teal, blue, aqua, white, green and stuff like that. We have used stuff like this for videos and things. Something else that is doing the rounds is the festivity eye look or rainbow eyes – where you use all colours on the eyes.”

Gaur summer trends include:

• For eyes, be playful this summer with colourful mascara and add extensions in lashes; highlight eyes using navy blue or electric blue coloured liner to give clients that extra mileage; and finally, use two-tone eye shadow moonlight blue, and aqua green, baby pink, and navy blue.

• In terms of hair, the already trending colour streak will grow. Clients will explore using more than one colour in their hair. In fact, more vibrant colours are going to be in, such as green, ash grey, and royal blue.

• For nails, with the help of extensions, nail art is going to take over the makeup trends. Extensive nail art and highend extension with 3-D shapes, beads, and jewels will set the summer ablaze.

• In winters, we prefer warm tones like smoky, wine colours darker shades, however, in summers, clients love to wear brighter colours. I would say, this summer, more pastels like millennial pink, pale turquoise, linen, steel blue, whimsy yellow, sea green, creamy mint, and light azure will be popular, so try all these colours and keep pampering your clients!

Bambboat’s insights on summer looks are:

• When talking about the different makeup trends for summer, we should keep factors in mind like the weather, some places are far more humid than others. Although trends are emerging every year, they do become more specific or are tailored to what a region expects.

• In terms of summer preferences, I do not think there is a preference for different looks during summer but client’s expect you to cater to what their skin requires – so no matter what the trend, they prefer a makeup artist to tailor make makeup for them – for the weather, atmosphere, and lighting that they are going to be in. ‘Summer looks’ are secondary but individualised makeup makes clients feel special and that is what they like to have.

• As far as events and people wearing a mask go, if you ask me about beauty treatments and routines, I recommend that clients pamper their skin a lot. They should constantly hydrate, use a moisturiser for nighttime, not daytime, since in

coastal cities like Mumbai, the humidity is high.

• For a bride or for a shoot, I want to have nicely ex-foliated skin, where dead skin cells are removed. Daily face ex-foliates are available, which are a must.

• When you want someone to have bare minimalistic makeup, it is all about the skin. Hence, I recommend treatments. But some clients are not happy with treatments – they might find them too invasive. So I recommend that they do a mesotherapy, which is a cocktail of vitamin and minerals that are put into the skin by a dermatologist. I have also seen Glutathione work amazingly for brides, family members and actresses who have used them in high dosages.

• I always recommend homeremedies, chandan and besan, which nourish and pamper the skin. I also recommend aloe vera for dry skin and tea tree for acne prone skin.

Gaur leaves us with this message. “A cure for COVID-19 is on the horizon, but unfortunately, people who have recovered and are still safe have started taking things casually. I would wholeheartedly like to make a request and recommend taking necessary precautions. Visit the beauty clinics that are strictly following the sanitization process. And avoid needlework as much as you can to avoid the chances of contracting the infection."
