Day & Night

As we shed the gloom of 2020 and look forward to a year of hope and light, we could not hope for more appropriate colours to be representational of this sentiment. Tasneem Hatimbhai gets experts to talk about Pantone's colours of 2021.

T

he global authority on color, Pantone has declared their Colour of the Year 2021 selection as PANTONE 17-5104 Ultimate Gray + PANTONE 13-0647 Illuminating. According to the Pantone website, grey and yellow are, “A marriage of colour conveying a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting.”

We know that colours can calm, soothe, excite and lighten our spirits; Pantone colours are reflected all around us in fashion, design, décor, art, and beauty, serving as a reflection of the spirit of the times. The beauty and fashion industry are forebearers of all global trends – here’s a look at what two industry experts think about the ways these two colours could be used in nail art and make-up this year.

Nail Art

“The nail industry in India is unique when it comes to nail art. Bollywood along with Hollywood is a trendsetter for fashion and beauty and nails are right up there. Seasons and trends weave their way like a meandering stream showcasing the latest designs and the Pantone colours play a big role. The femme fatales demand the latest nail art in the current blend of colours. As we can see this year, the wave is all about lu minous yellow, metallic grey in h olographic or matte. The u ltimate union of warm grey and v ibrant shades of yellow raise the sp irit to the next level. Yellow re presents happiness and the d ramatic mix of black and white p roduces the mysterious grey, which is elegant and formal. It is a heady mix that turns heads.”

Makeup

“Talking about the Pantone colours, the yellow is more for brightening the skin tone, whereas greys look ashy, and so, we do not really recommend grey for the skin. However, greys are great for smokey eyes, especially when someone does not like black smokey eyes, greys and browns look fantastic instead! For the eyes, I always recommend warm tones, which are more friendly than cool tones. In terms of eye shadow colours, always look for lovely coppers, golds, rustic colours and rick tones! The brow bone looks b eautiful with warm tones, w hereas for the eyelids greyish t ones are great but you cannot u se them on the brow bone a rea too. You can do a grey s mokey on the lower lash line! I re commend warm tones and not cold tones. Be it whoever – divas, celebrities, or brides – the trend is minimum make-up on foundation! Look brighter but not whiter!”
