Union Budget 2021 for beauty, health, and wellness

The pandemic hit the beauty and wellness sector quite hard, like it did several other industries as well. Being an industry that involves tactile care, it (beauty and wellness sector) probably bore the brunt harder than most. The Union Budget for 2021 offered several proposals to help (re) develop the beauty, health, and wellness sectors in India. As reported, the Budget proposal for 2021-2022 rests on six pillars and the primary pillar is health and wellbeing since it has been considered the most important sector of the current times. The Budget proposes both curative and well-being approaches for prevention of diseases, and a holistic approach to cover the health sector. In the PM’s AtmaNirbhar Swasth Bharat Yojna, it has been proposed to disburse Rs 64,180 crore over six years to support health and wellness centres. The proposal for health and well-being is Rs 2,23,846 crore in the budget expectation 2021-22 as against 2020’s budget expectation of Rs 94,452 crore – which is a significant increase of 137 per cent. This will tremendously aid in bringing about a significant change in the health sector in the nation.

L'oreal bans use of animal hair for brushes

L’Oreal Group has announced that it has banned the use of badger, goat, and all other animal hair in its brushes, as per PETA. Every badger-hair or goat-hair brush represents a sensitive animal who endured violence. “This compassionate and forward-thinking decision by L’Oréal Group will help PETA affiliates push the beauty and art industries to embrace synthetic brushes, which do not harm a single hair on an animal’s head,” said Mathilde Dorbessan, Corporate Responsibility Officer, PETA France. After years of badgering from animal-rights groups, L’Oréal has joined nearly 100 other beauty marketers and suppliers in eliminating animal-hair brushes.

A PETA Asia investigation into China’s badger-brush industry revealed that badgers are bred or even captured in their natural homes and confined to small wire cages on filthy fur factory farms. At the end of these animals’ short, miserable lives, humans beat them and slit their throats. After they have been killed, their stolen hair is used in all kinds of brushes – those for painting, applying makeup, and shaving. Animal cruelty has become a rising concern across the globe. Support of industry giants like the L’Oréal Group is a definitive step towards a much-needed change. Leading players of the market can set an example for many more and bring a downward trend in the rising animal cruelty worldwide. L’Oréal Group is among nearly 100 cosmetics, paintbrush, and shaving companies around the world.
