The Next Big Thing: MAKE-UP TRENDS 2022

The trendsetting world of beauty is always evolving, with new products, techniques and looks emerging all the time. We get down to losing down the biggest make-up trends set to take over the year 2022.

2 022 is shaping up to be a big year for beauty and make-up trends. We’re already seeing a lot of new and exciting developments. First and foremost, we’re witnessing a resurgence of natural beauty. More and more people are embracing their unique features, and they’re looking for make-up that will help them look and feel their best. So, we can expect to see a lot of minimalistic make-up looks, with an emphasis on enhancing natural beauty.

Another big trend for 2022 is customisation. With the rise of social media, people are increasingly looking for ways to express their individuality. That’s why bespoke make-up products, from eyeshadows that can be customised to match your unique eye colour, to lipsticks that can be personalised to match your skin tone, are high on our trend-o-meter.

It’s the tone of the year!

Every year, Pantone releases their Colour of the Year. This year, it’s called ‘Very Peri.’ This pinky-purple hue is said to be the perfect shade for make-up. The Colour of the Year is often used to inspire fashion and home trends for the upcoming year. So, what can you expect to see in store this year? Lots of Very Peri!

Let’s take a look at some experts’ predictions about the make-up world of 2022:

NATASHA DHODY, DIRECTOR, GRACE BEAUTY CLINIC

Lip colours in style: Although we had our lips hidden behind the masks in 2021, let’s have an optimistic approach so that we can flaunt our pout this year! While our lip shades were on a break, the textures for lip make-up have taken a turnover from stay-on matt lipsticks to super glossy with a hint of colour, be it a fresh pink, burgundy, or coral. Plump, fuller, and juicy lips should be the look of 2022.

Trendy colours for eyes: The trends in eye make-up have shifted from dark to subtle smokey lash lines with fresher colours like mint, green and purple. Colourful, bold, geometrical eyeliners are the 2022 trend. Neon graphic eyeliners are in vogue, too. It is the complete eye make-up look in itself. Super fluffy brows, milder versions of soap brows are in. Extensively heavy lashes are out for 2022, softer lashes speak volumes in drawing attention to the eye make-up.

Global trends to watch out for: Though soft glam makeup has been trending, the year 2022 likes some glitter. The predictions are, this year’s make-up look will be dazzling with embellishments, crystals, pearls, and face gems. Eyes are still going to be the focal point with dewy skin and statement blush on.

The Very Peri trend: The colour Very Peri is quite a break from the colours trending till 2021. Smudge a Very Peri shadow across the lash line or smoke it up on the eyelid. Maybe just an eyeliner by itself can bring out the eye colour. It complements blue, green eyes as well as our Indian brown eyes. Not only will this colour go well on eyes, use it as the latest trend coming back from the ’90s of darker Very Peri lip liner melted inwards with a nude shade.

Popular hues in bridal make-up: Over and done with pastels, 2022 will see brides with bright colours, glossy sheens, dewy highlights and overplayed blush.

Hot pinks, purples, corals, and metallics will be hot this year. We leave the colours for the outfit and accessories, the make-up will present a glowing bride with subtle metallic, embellished hues and spruced up with a hint of bright colour.

What to avoid in 2022: The heavy foundation and strong contour are a passé in 2022. We could see a natural foundation with amplified highlights on the high points. Ditching the heavy artificial lashes, more natural lashes could be seen. We should witness glossy lips leaving behind the stay-on & non-transferable lipsticks in 2021.

Dos and don’ts for use of colours: 2022 comes with a freshness of many experimental elements like bright eyeliners, glitters, face crystals, overdrawn darker lip liners, glossy lips. I would want to tell the artists to keep one element as the focal point and go easy around the other areas. Like bright eyes call for understated lips.

Lip colours in style: There will be more gloss around this season rather than matte lipsticks. In terms of colours, you will see a lot of terracottas. You might also see a lot of nudes, either rosy or dusty roses.

Trendy colors for the eyes: Coloured eyeshadows will be a big thing for those who like to play with colours -play around with matte colours, metallics, pinks, glitter, it could be anything. Mascara is a big thing. This depends on the skin tone and whether you prefer black or brown. For eyeliner, you can opt for black, electric blue, green, or purple, which is also the Pantone colour for the year. However, the most sophisticated look is achieved with brown eyeliner. The same goes for the kajal pencil also!

Global trends to watch out for: You can see so many different looks created by international makeup artists by using metallic and glitter eyeshadows. On the other hand, we have monochromatic looks, where the base colour of make-up is very similar to each other. For example, I love creating peach monochromatic looks for my clients, as they look very youthful, fresh, and healthy but also sexy and work extremely well on Indian skin. There will also be a lot of contouring and highlighting this season, as well as big lips and glossy lips because people are inspired by global trends. Besides wing-tipped eyeliner and double eyeliner, you will also see good use of cutting and triple eyeliner.

The use of Very Peri: I love lilacs on Indian skin tones! You can go crazy with this colour, you can also wear it on the lips, or as mascara, there are many ways you can use it. It is one of my favourite shades.

Popular hues in bridal make-up: As far as Indian bridal make-up is concerned, I’ve seen people experimenting with colours but the big trend right now is monochromatic make-up. Then there’s bold lips and clean eyes, one trend that will never go out of style. There are a lot of terracotta tones, a lot of dusty roses. These are the kinds of colours people are experimenting with for their weddings.

Dos and don’ts for 2022:

● Make sure you use the right shade of foundation on the client’s face. Get an idea of whether it blends well on the client’s face and then use it all over.

● A lot of people use lashes that are way bigger than the size of actual lashes of the person. Bigger lashes make your eyes droopy, that’s not acceptable, as a makeup artist -if you are using fake lashes, make sure you measure them correctly. And the whole idea is to lift the eyes with lashes and not to make them droopy, and if you think lashes are too big, cut them off or use another pair or design if you want to -do not make the eyes, droopy make them lifted.

● Some people place their contour blusher in the wrong place and highlight it at the wrong angle, making their faces look droopy, fat, or depressed.

● Using blush on the apple of your cheeks is a good idea, however, if you have a round face, you should use it on the side of your cheekbones.

● Make sure you don’t highlight too much -it can ruin your face. Use very little highlighter where it is needed. Also, I see people using lip colours that aren’t meant for them, so if you are wearing lipstick, make sure you have a matching lip pencil. Draw the lips very nicely, it should not be crooked, because crooked is something which looks bad in pictures. They should look very neat and sharp.

Lastly, when applying eyeliner, make sure it is aligned, which is extremely important.

Lip colours in style: Today is not the time for trends, but for experimenting with colours and going on adventures. When you have done your eyes smokey or extra-bold or shimmery and shiny, you can do the lips in nude colours, such as nude brown, nude peach, or nude apricot. If you want to try out something new with your lips, or if you want to give your eyes a bit of colour, then you can choose metallic colours, or green, or gold, or blue, violet, or even black. There are different ways to portray yourself, such as retro or Arabian looks!

Alternatively, you could go for a fantasy look! It is necessary to outline your lips correctly if you have painted them green. Fill your lips with green, then smudge on a bit of bottle green, then put on some parrot green with a gold shine, even put a shimmering drop under your lower lip, and voila! You have gorgeous lips!

Trendy colours the eyes: Blue and green kajal are all very fashionable, but you have to be very careful when blending and applying them since mistakes can make the whole look wrong. You can apply white in the inner corner of the eyes to enlarge them.

Eyeshadow can be monochromatic or bichromatic, or even rainbow, with the crease line, is done very well. Start with the light and work your way up.

Mascara can be brown and blonde, blue and green, but the important thing is how you use it. To achieve a natural look, you need to apply black mascara and let it dry, and over that apply a blue or green mascara, then brush it well.

The use of Very Peri: Violet is my favourite shade to play with. I like to use it extensively and even do bridal and party make-up with the latest trends.

Popular hues in bridal make-up: Throughout India, it might vary from North East, where we tend to be more subtle and plain, with more of a beauty and glow, and most likely we don’t differ from the oriental colours like soft eyes and soft skin. For the young bride, it will be mauve to violet and pink. And for the little mature bride, it will go from red to dark brown, and shimmer will be in, but not heavy or dramatic. As we wear white, with white we put on too much make-up, it starts looking very bad.

Dos and don’ts for 2022:

Do play and have adventures with colours! Try light colours, then a little bit of adventure with medium to dark shades, but don’t play with dark shades, if you don’t want to look aged and mature -make sure you wear soft tones.

When it comes to fantasy looks, you need to do some patching and testing. It has to be precise and good, so if you aren’t experienced, don’t do this!

The latest trend in the beauty and make-up industry are shades deemed to be appropriate for all skin tones. This means choosing an appropriate shade for your lips, base, and nails is about using colours that flatter your skin tone. The hottest trends this season seem to revolve around nude shades with a hint of pink, purples, or deep reds; there is the perfect option out there.
