BUILDING A BETTER Tomorrow
Dr Archana Ainapure, Director, Symbiosis Skills and Professional University (SSPU), gives Priyanka Parshurami a lowdown about its comprehensive beauty and wellness programme.
Back in 2017, Symbiosis Open Education Society had announced the establishment of Maharashtra’s first skill development university -Symbiosis Skills and Professional University (SSPU), at Kiwale, Pune. Providing degree, diploma and certification programmes in disciplines such as beauty, wellness, media management and film-making, the university’s objective is to prepare industry-ready youth who are trained and competent.
In the field of beauty and wellness, SSPU provides a Bachelor of Science degree and micro certifications to aspiring professionals to give them the training and skills necessary to start a career in beauty. Here is an excerpt from the interview…
HOLISTIC APPROACH
“We teach our kids everything necessary for holistic wellness. From alternative therapies like yoga, naturopathy and nutrition to spas as well as medical spas. We focus on comprehensive education. The curriculum is meticulously designed in a way that incorporates all branches of beauty and wellness, and also artificial intelligence (AI) as it is the need of this generation. This makes it a one-stop destination for all aspiring professionals.
INDUSTRY-DRIVEN CURRICULUM
“This field is ever-evolving, so there is a growing demand for updated, well-trained professionals. Every year, an industry meeting is conducted on the campus. This is attended by experts from various fields and they share their valuable insights on the latest trends. This knowledge pool helps the university make necessary changes to its syllabus, thus ensuring that students receive the education that is aligned with current industry needs.”
RESEARCH AND INNOVATION
“One of our students is working on an AI-based machine that produces a foundation that’s an accurate match for your skin tone. Similarly, we are also trying to develop a new technique of facial where oxygen is incorporated into the skin and regenerates the skin. Students also file patents in their names. Boats and Brains, a research company, helps students to develop their innovative machines and techniques. This shows the programme’s commitment to embracing technology.”
FLEXIBLE LEARNING PATHS
“Our courses are approved and hence the credit system allows students to earn extra credits for further education, such as pursuing post-graduation in the fields of their specialisations.
Upon completion of the programme, students have access to a wide range of career opportunities. The university provides internships and assists with placements. Graduates can explore careers in salons, wellness centres, cosmetic companies or even start their own businesses. The paths to tread are countless.”
FUTURE PROSPECTS
“The programme foresees the establishment of specialised beauty and wellness institutes, similar to medical colleges, dedicated to providing high-quality education in this field. This vision aims to standardise beauty and wellness education.”
The university encourages students to do research and innovation. Students are invited to propose research projects, and they actively participate in innovation endeavours. They can specialise in specific areas such as skin care, haircare, make-up or cosmetology. Alternatively, they can focus on wellness, including yoga, naturopathy and nutrition.
SSPU’s Beauty and Wellness programme stands as a pioneer in the field, offering a comprehensive and industry-aligned education that prepares students for several rewarding career paths.
