Do You Need To Follow Trends to be a good hairdresser?

Two stylists discuss whether following trends is key to being a great hairdresser

DEBATE

YES

“It can be beneficial to stay informed about current trends for a number of reasons. Many clients look to their hairdressers for advice on the latest styles, and having this knowledge allows you to discuss popular options and help them make informed decisions about their hair. Clients often seek hairdressers who are knowledgeable about trends and can offer modern, fashionable looks; they are more likely to visit a salon that’s ahead of their competitors including offering the latest products and services.

Trends often gain popularity through social media platforms and being aware of these can be valuable for your online presence and marketing efforts. You will not only gain interest from new clients, but also industry professionals and industry or consumer media looking for comments on the latest trending styles.

Being aware of the latest trends can be incredibly advantageous for learning and adapting your skills as a hairdresser

Being aware of the latest trends can be incredibly advantageous for learning and adapting your skills as a hairdresser. They can serve as a source of inspiration for new techniques, colour combinations and styles and can be great for providing inspiration for collections and shoots. This will help in guiding you to produce incredible creative work.

While trends can be beneficial, they are not the sole indicator of your talent or abilities as a hairdresser, and you should balance trends with timeless techniques and a focus on individual client needs to be a successful hairdresser."

SUZIE MCGILL, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR AT RAINBOW ROOM INTERNATIONAL

NO

“I don’t think it is important to follow trends. The hairdressing industry is a very fast paced world, and what is trending today, may not be tomorrow. I don’t feel this defines you as a good hairdresser. Trends play an important part in our everyday roles, and the influences of social media platforms, the world of AI, celebrities and influencers is part of a new era of trends. Being able to adapt to these, to provide your clients with the must have looks and styles is vital – it keeps you ahead of your competitors and adds value and income to your business. However, following trends does not make you a good hairdresser – it only adds to the skills you have built through continuous education and practical work.

Hairdressing offers so many different opportunities to learn and engage that any individual can choose whether to become an all-rounder and put their efforts into all areas of the craft or opt for a more niche skillset. From live education with products, brands and educators to online education – there is so much out there, and it is essential that any hairdresser uses these platforms in order to build on their skills and continue to grow as a stylist.

Our skills are more than just the creative aspect of hair, we combine a variety of skills such as communication, technical expertise, adaptability alongside being fantastic listeners for our clients. For me personally, being your own creative self and embracing education makes you a good hairdresser.”
