Dr Bharti Taneja, Founder, Alps Beauty Group, discusses skincare trends for 2024 with Kanishka Ramchandani in a bid to educate skin therapists on the importance of upgradation and upskilling.
Skin is a crucial part of the salon business, yet when it comes to trends, we tend to focus on hair and make-up. It’s time to change this narrative. We, at Professional Beauty x Hairdressers Journal, are believe in staying ahead of the curve. With commitment to guide beauty professionals on the right path ahead, we get industry veteran and skincare guru Dr Bharti Taneja, Founder, Alps Beauty Group, to spell out skincare trends for 2024.
Are there specific skincare techniques or treatments that you think will gain prominence in 2024?
I’ve been keeping a close eye on the latest trends in skincare treatments, and there are some exciting things on the horizon. One that caught my attention is the microneedling with radiofrequency – it’s like a double whammy for collagen stimulation, helping with wrinkles and overall skin texture.
And then there’s exosome therapy. It’s this fascinating treatment that taps into stem cells’ potential, using exosomes to revitalise and repair the skin. I’m really intrigued by the idea of harnessing the power of these tiny vesicles for a more youthful look.
Another thing I found pretty cool is skin microbiome transplants. They’re all about bringing back balance to our skin’s microbial community. Applying beneficial bacteria seems like a unique approach to tackling issues like acne and inflammation.
And oh, peptides! They’re like superheroes for the skin.
I’ve been reading up on peptide therapy, tailored to specific concerns like collagen production and hydration. It’s like a personalised solution for different skin needs.
Lastly, the non-invasive body contouring methods have also caught my attention. Things like HIFEM treatments sound promising, offering a way to build muscle and reduce fat without going under the knife. It’s exciting to see how technology is transforming the skincare landscape!
How will you incorporate these trends into your product line?
Exciting times lie ahead for our skincare brand as we weave together the latest ingredients and trends to curate an innovative and effective skincare range like niacinamide serums and our Adaptogen Soothe & Shield Series. Derived from plants like rhodiola, ashwagandha and holy basil, these products are designed to combat stress-induced skin issues. Experience the calming power of nature as your skin adapts and thrives, promoting a resilient and healthier complexion.
At our brand, we’re not just following trends; we are committed to ethical sourcing, inclusivity and making sure personalised skincare shines through in each product.
Which ingredients or formulations have been most sought after in skincare products?
For us at Bharti Taneja’s Alps, it is important for us to create an ethical skincare product line amplifies ethical sourcing as we prioritise plant-based ingredients while ensuring sustainability and fair trade practices. The primary challenge we face is responsibly sourcing botanical extracts without causing environmental harm or exploiting local communities. For us Maintaining transparency throughout the supply chain becomes crucial in confirming that all components align with our ethical standards. Moreover, the cost implications of ethically sourced vegan ingredients can be demanding, requiring strategic considerations to balance quality, sustainability, and affordability for our consumers. Striking this delicate equilibrium is essential to uphold our commitment to ethical practices, provide top-notch skincare, and maintain competitive pricing within the market.
What are the key concerns of your clientele with regards to skincare?
Selecting skincare is a thoughtful process for our clients. Protection against the sun is paramount, considering the city’s climate, prompting a preference for effective SPF formulations to combat UV exposure. Pigmentation and uneven skin tone are key concerns, influenced by factors like pollution, leading to a demand for products addressing hyperpigmentation and promoting overall skin brightening.
Ageing-related worries are also prevalent, with a focus on anti-ageing solutions that target fine lines and wrinkles. The impact of the rising pollution these days on skin health adds an extra layer of concern, necessitating detoxifying and protective skincare products. Additionally, the urban lifestyle contributes to stress-induced skin issues, creating an interest in products featuring adaptogens for a comprehensive approach to skincare and that is why we are launching our new skin care range.
Lastly, the growing emphasis on sustainability and cruelty-free formulations aligns with the environmental consciousness of this clientele.
SKINCARE INGREDIENTS TO WATCH OUT FOR:
Bakuchiol: This plant-derived alternative to retinol has gained popularity for its anti-aging properties. Sourced from the Psoralea corylifolia plant, native to Eastern Asia, Bakuchiol offers similar benefits to retinol without the potential irritation, making it suitable for sensitive skin.
Mushroom extract: It’s recognised for its rich antioxidants, vitamin D and anti-inflammatory properties. This natural ingredient is being hailed as a boon for skin health, providing deep hydration, brightening effects, and promising combat against signs of aging.
Niacinamide (vitamin B3): Known for its skinbrightening and anti-inflammatory properties, niacinamide is changing the skincare game. Sourced from niacin, a form of vitamin B3, it’s commonly found in yeast, meat, fish, milk, and green vegetables. Its versatility has made it a staple in products targeting various skin concerns.
Bee venom: Heralded for its potential anti-aging and skin-firming effects, bee venom is sourced from honeybee venom. Although controversial due to ethical concerns, some formulations use synthetic versions to mimic the effects without harming bees.
Adaptogens: Derived from various plants like rhodiola, ashwagandha and holy basil, adaptogens are gaining traction in skincare for their ability to combat stress-induced skin issues. These botanical ingredients help the skin adapt to stressors, promoting a healthier complexion.
Dominant skincare trends for 2024
Intravenous (IV) therapies: This emerging trend involves administering nutrient-rich solutions directly into the bloodstream, delivering a potent blend of vitamins and antioxidants. With potential benefits for skin health, including enhanced collagen production and improved hydration, IV therapies are gaining traction among those seeking a holistic approach to skincare.
Personalised skincare: The move towards personalised skincare extends beyond basic categorisations, with formulations customised based on individual factors like genetics, lifestyle and environmental exposure. This tailored approach ensures that each product addresses specific skin concerns, fostering a more effective and personalised skincare routine.
Plant-based products: The surge in demand for plant-based skincare aligns with a broader sustainability movement. Plant-derived ingredients, rich in antioxidants and natural compounds, are not only beneficial for the skin but also resonate with consumers seeking environmentally friendly and ethically sourced products, contributing to a greener beauty industry.
Blue light protection: Recognising the potential harm caused by prolonged exposure to blue light, skincare formulations now incorporate ingredients like antioxidants and reflective particles. These elements act as a shield, helping to mitigate the effects of blue light on the skin, addressing concerns such as premature aging and pigmentation caused by screen time.
Microbiome skincare: Understanding the delicate balance of the skin’s microbiome, skincare formulations now integrate probiotics and prebiotics. These elements support the skin’s natural ecosystem, promoting a healthy balance of bacteria, and ultimately contribute to a strengthened skin barrier, reducing sensitivity and enhancing overall skin resilience.
High-tech devices: The rise of at-home skincare devices represents a fusion of technology and beauty. LED light therapy masks utilise specific wavelengths to target various skin concerns, while microcurrent facial devices stimulate muscles for improved tone and elasticity. These advancements offer users an accessible and convenient way to elevate their skincare routine, bridging the gap between professional spa treatments and at-home care.
