Men’s styling has always been in the backseat of the beauty bandwagon. Men are slow at adopting styling routines and slower still at following trends. But all this is about to change, thanks to the efforts of hairdressing icons such as Darshan Yewalekar, Celebrity Hairdresser and Owner, D Barbers Shop and Academy, With an experience of over two decades and expertise that earned him the sobriquet ‘celebrity stylist,’ Yewalekar is all set to change the status quo in men’s hairstyling. Excerpts from his interview…

REVIVING VINTAGE VIBES

“The one style that men must look forward to in 2024 is the mullet! With a longer length and a subtle, rounded top, a mullet will bring an essence of vintage sophistication to today’s styling scene. As fades, and shorter and sharper styles have dominated for years at a stretch, this look is set to bring a refreshing change. Cultural influences from actors such as Ranveer Singh, and a collective need for diversity in men’s hairstyles that has contributed to this revival.”

BREAKING THE MONOTONY

“For years now, when we speak of men’s hair colours, muted tones have been the obvious choices. The landscape is slowly but surely changing. Breaking away from monotony and simultaneously welcoming selfexpression and inclusivity, vibrant colours are expected to take centrestage in 2024. Men are now more willing to experiment with their looks with a wide spectrum of hues.”

EMBRACING CURLS

“Curly hair for men has been often considered outdated and even unruly. As a result, men have continued to straighten their hair for a long time. Not anymore! With more and more stars embracing their curls and experimenting with perms, men are now rejoicing in their natural textures. This will surely be a departure from the uniformity that has prevailed for so long.

Just as beach waves became popular for women, men too, are leaning towards their natural texture or experimenting with perms to achieve a new look.”

GOODBYE 2023

“As fashion evolves, some trends overstay their welcome. The man bun was once a symbol of contemporary style, but now it has reached its expiration. As styling shifts towards individuality, this trend has nearly lost its appeal. The man bun sported with a beard had its moment, but in 2024, no more!”

SOUND ADVICE

“For those aspiring to make it into men’s styling, patience and dedication are essential. Training for two-five years with a seasoned professional is invaluable in honing one’s craft. Rushing into the field to make a quick buck without adequate experience can hinder the development of necessary skills. It’s the experience gained from handling various hair types and styles that will refine your expertise.”
