UPGRADE YOUR SKIN

Facials are a beloved staple for clients seeking both relaxation and skincare benefits. Thanks to technology, the landscape of facial treatments is undergoing a significant transformation. Kanishka Ramchandani finds out what advanced facial treatments have in store for us in 2024.

Facials have always been the go-to option for beauty clients, be it for special occasions like weddings, for treating specific skin concerns or simply for some ‘me-time’ of pampering and relaxation. They are popularly recommended to be done once in a month, at least, and come in a wide range of options. Facials are divided as per skin concern (anti-ageing, de-tan, glow, etc) and as per the key ingredients in the products (fruit extracts, marine extracts, gold dust, etc). However, the techniques of administering a facial are undergoing rapid change, thanks to upgraded teaching systems, and aestheticians are now turning to more advanced methodologies. With social media spreading the good word, we have advanced treatments, such as HydraFacial, gaining traction amongst the more discerning beauty enthusiasts. We quizzed skincare experts about the changing trends in treatments and the advent of advanced solutions.

At Envi Salon, Juhu, clients can opt for regular salon facials or go for a detailed consultation with their in-house dermatologist and get a medifacial done with the use of latest technology and device. Speaking about the major skin concerns amongst Indians, Dr XXX, XXX, Envi Salon, “Signs of ageing are the primary concern. Issues such as fine lines, wrinkles, sagging and dull skin are common concerns. Apart from this, there is pigmentation, acne and facial/body hair. Hair loss is also another major issue. We offer a wide range of treatments, including medifacials, to address these problems.”

Trending treatments

Dr Madhuri Agarwal, Founder and Director, Yavana Aesthetics Clinic, says, “We have incorporated multiple technologies in our skincare therapies. Initially we were using machines for exfoliation and cleansing and infusions like HydraFacial. Slowly we started incorporating treatments like Q-switch lasers, LED light therapy, oxygen masks and radio frequency. Over time, the treatments have become more advanced, so it’s no longer just a medi-facial.”

“In 2024, we are looking at more advancement, especially in treatments that could naturally stimulate your skin. You will see radiofrequency treatments with HIFU technology, electrical muscle stimulation, ultrasound diathermy, refined LED light therapy and more such advanced treatments gaining popularity this year,” she adds.

Some of the key concerns that advanced facials can address include the following:

1. Fine lines and wrinkles: The exfoliation and hydration components of advanced facials can help improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, promoting smootherlooking skin.

2. Elasticity and firmness: The treatment can help enhance the skin’s elasticity and firmness, contributing to a more youthful and supple complexion.

3. Uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation: The exfoliation and infusion of antioxidants in treatments, such as the HydraFacial, can assist in reducing the appearance of uneven skin tone and areas of hyperpigmentation.

4. Skin texture and congestion: It can help improve skin texture and address issues related to skin congestion and clogged pores.

5. Skin hydration: One of the key benefits of an advanced facial is its ability to deeply hydrate the skin, which can be particularly beneficial for individuals with dry or dehydrated skin.

6. Oily skin and enlarged pores: It can potentially help reduce the appearance of enlarged pores and manage excess oil production.

“We have an ingredient design philosophy wherein we do not swim with the current, we create the current. We balance conscious science with nature and artistry. Our imaginative approaches become the building blocks for exceptional products that care for people and the planet. Our fundamentals include:

-Preservation

-Biodegradable film formers as 98 per cent of the portfolio ingredients are biodegradable

-Standard or silicon alternatives”

Customised care

Advanced facial treatments follow a multi-step protocol that combines cleansing, exfoliation, extraction and hydration. While they are designed to improve the overall appearance of the skin, addressing various skincare needs such as fine lines and wrinkles, elasticity and firmness, even tone and vibrancy and skin texture, it is important to customise the treatment as per the client’s specific concern, lifestyle and other determining factors. This involves a thorough consultation and expert knowledge of skin, ingredients in the products and, of course, impact of the technology.

Speaking about her best-selling facials, Dr Agarwal says, “We have two best-selling facials – the Red Carpet and the Aqua Revive. I have designed a Red Carpet medifacial for my clinic with my technologies. That’s always a winner! Both these treatments are bespoke because each time we see a client, there’s a change in their skin. So, I make some changes in the treatment protocol to give them maximum benefits for their skin.”

“Clients today want the ambience and the sensorial experience, apart from the results, of a skin therapy. So, we have incorporated muscle stimulation to make the entire treatment a more wholesome experience,” she adds.

It is important to note that outcomes may vary based on individual skin types and concerns, so the consultation process is critical to the success of the treatment.

There are several advanced facial treatments that are popular in India due to their effectiveness in addressing various skincare needs. These include:

HydraFacial: It is a non-invasive skincare treatment that includes cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, hydration and antioxidant protection simultaneously.

Microdermabrasion: This non-invasive procedure exfoliates and removes the superficial layer of dry, dead skin cells, promoting the growth of healthy, new skin. It’s effective for treating acne scars, uneven skin tone and fine lines.

Chemical peels: Chemical peels involve the application of a chemical solution to the skin, which exfoliates the outer layer and reveals a smoother, more radiant complexion. They are used to address concerns such as acne, sun damage and uneven pigmentation.

Oxygen Facial: This treatment involves the use of pressurised oxygen to deliver a customised serum of hyaluronic acid, vitamins and antioxidants to the skin. It’s known for its hydrating and rejuvenating effects, promoting a youthful glow.

LED Facial: Light Emitting Diode (LED) facials use different wavelengths of light to target specific skin concerns, such as acne, inflammation and ageing. The treatment is non-invasive and can help improve skin texture and tone.

Anti-ageing facials: These facials often incorporate collagen-boosting treatments and products to address fine lines, wrinkles and loss of skin elasticity.

The popularity of these facials may vary based on individual skin concerns, preferences and the expertise of skincare professionals offering these treatments. It’s essential to consult with a qualified skincare specialist to determine the most suitable facial treatment based on one’s unique skincare needs. PBHJ
