In the world of hairdressing, scissors are the unsung heroes—simple yet indispensable tools that define the craft. For Indian hairstylists, these cutting instruments are not merely tools but extensions of their artistry. The precision and finesse of a haircut hinge on the quality and technique of using scissors. From classic styles to modern cuts, every snip contributes to the overall masterpiece. This story explores how these essential tools shape the industry, their evolution and their critical role in transforming hairdressing into an art form.

Every skilled hairstylist understands that the right pair of scissors can make or break a haircut. These seemingly simple instruments are crucial for achieving precision, shaping and styling. Discover how these vital tools elevate the craft and help stylists master their mane artistry.

DEEPAK JALHAN,

Artist/ Educator Creative Director, Looks Prive, Delhi “Scissors are the backbone of hairstyling. They are the key to achieving precision and finesse in every cut. The right pair of scissors can truly be a gamechanger—smaller shears for detailed, structured cuts and longer shears for broader styles. Maintenance is crucial; I clean and oil my scissors regularly to ensure they perform optimally. The latest advancements, such as high-grade steel and cold-storing techniques, have taken scissor technology to new heights, making them essential for any serious stylist aiming for excellence in their craft.”

NATASHA NAEGAMVALA,

Director, Nalini and Yasmin Salon “As a hairstylist, the right pair of scissors can truly make or break a haircut. Different cuts demand different scissors. For instance, I use smaller shears for short bobs and larger ones for long layers. The blade length and thickness are crucial for achieving the desired control and precision. I have had moments where switching to the right size made a significant difference in the outcome. Proper maintenance is also key—cleaning and oiling regularly while avoiding long soaks in water ensures longevity. Technology in scissor design continues to evolve, with innovations like swivel handles and improved materials enhancing performance and safety.”

AKIN KONIZI,

International Creative Director, HOB Academy, UK “Scissors are the most crucial tool in a hairstylist’s kit; they’re an extension of your body. Choosing the right pair can transform your craft. I carry multiple pairs—typically 5.5” or 6”—to suit different techniques. Thinning scissors are essential for achieving results that standard scissors can’t, such as seamless fades and vintage styles. The perfect scissors need to feel effortless, be lightweight and produce a precise sound when cutting. Proper maintenance involves keeping them in a protective bag, oiling them weekly and avoiding any damage or misuse.”

VAISHAKHI HARIA,

Founder, Splash Salon “Scissors are fundamental to hairstyling, and their choice greatly impacts precision. Different scissors are essential for various techniques— smooth cutting, texturising and more. I prefer minimalistic, stainless steel scissors with sharp pointed edges for control, especially for short haircuts. Although some hairstylists use specific scissors for each technique, I find that maintaining a sharp, versatile pair works best for me. Regular maintenance, including sanitising and occasional sharpening, is crucial. Despite the rise of titanium-coated scissors, I still favour classic designs but stay open to new advancements in the industry.”

Each stylist’s approach highlights the profound role scissors play in the craft of hairdressing. From Deepak Jalan’s emphasis on the transformative power of precision cutting tools to Natasha Naegamvala’s focus on adapting scissors to various techniques, the consensus is clear: the right scissors are indispensable. Akin Konizi’s international perspective reinforces the importance of maintaining a variety of scissors for different tasks, while Vaishakhi Haria’s preference for classic designs combined with modern maintenance techniques underscores the balance between tradition and innovation.

Scissors are not just tools; they are extensions of the stylist’s vision and skill. Their evolution— from traditional steel to advanced materials like titanium—reflects the ongoing progress in the industry. As hairstylists continue to refine their craft, the importance of selecting and maintaining the right pair of scissors remains a fundamental aspect of their artistry.
