SUNKISSED no more

Restore the natural glow and health of your skin after a stint in the sun. Our skin expert Vaishali Balu Sangole, Senior Beautician, Juice Salon, gives a lowdown to Priyanka Parshurami on the bene昀椀ts of a de-tan facial.

Given the natural brown tone of the Indian skin, suntanned skin is not a preferred choice for us. The melanin content in Indian skin makes even the slightest of tan visible. Tanning also results in fine lines and dry skin. But that doesn’t mean you don’t get to enjoy your time in the sun. Be generous with your sunscreen and indulge in a de-tan facial once you are back. Our skin expert Vaishali Balu Sangole, Senior Beautician, Juice Salon, gives us all the details on the benefits of a de-tan facial. She believes in providing personalised beauty treatments, be it skincare or make-up, and to ensure that clients leave the salon feeling confident and stylish.

Why is tanning an issue with Indian customers? How does a de-tan facial help in dealing with it?

Tanning concerns Indians due to skin tone preferences. A de-tan facial removes tan, brightens your complexion and restores your skin’s natural radiance.

What are the key ingredients in a de-tan facial that helps remove tan?

The key de-tan facial ingredients are exfoliants such as alpha hydroxy acids, natural brighteners (such as liquorice extract) antioxidants and moisturisers for skin rejuvenation.

For which skin conditions do you advise a de-tan facial?

I recommend de-tan facial to clients who come with sun-exposure effects, uneven skin tone, dark spots or dull complexion, needing rejuvenation and glow.

Under what conditions should you not do a de-tan facial?

Avoid de-tan facial on sensitive skin that’s prone to irritation, active acne, sunburned or injured skin and during pregnancy.

Apart from tan removal, what are the other benefits of a de-tan facial?

A de-tan facial offers benefits like improved skin texture, reduced pigmentation, enhanced skin tone, increased collagen production and overall skin rejuvenation.

What are the steps to follow for an effective de-tan facial?

• Cleanse: Thoroughly cleanse the face to remove impurities.

• Steam: Steam the face to open pores and aid in tan removal.

• De-tan mask: Apply a de-tan mask with brightening agents.

• Moisturise: Hydrate the skin with a suitable moisturiser.

• Sunscreen: Apply sunscreen to protect the skin post-treatment.

What home care and home remedies do you recommend?

For home care, I recommend using gentle cleansers, sunscreen daily and moisturisers. You can also try home remedies such as aloe vera or yogurt-honey masks.

Tell us about the importance of sunscreen in order to avoid tanning.

Sunscreen is crucial to prevent tanning as it shields the skin from harmful UVrays, helps reduce melanin production and protects the skin against sunburns.

What kind of training is required for a therapist to do this facial?

A qualified beauty therapist should undergo training in skincare, facial techniques, product knowledge and safety protocols for e昀昀ective de¬-tan facials.

The frequency of de-tan facials on a client depends on their skin type and concerns. Generally, once every two-four weeks is sufficient.
